IF ONLY...

http://www.morguefile.com/

Nanu was breathing steadily on the hospital bed. Oxygen mask was intact and the dialysis machine did its work at intervals! The monitors were constantly beeping giving an eerie feel to the whole ambience. What else could someone feel, besides?

Kito, his granddaughter, was standing outside peeping through the circular glass window of the ICU door. As tears rolled down her cheeks she fell on the wheelchair outside.

It was on the wheelchair that Nanu was first brought to the emergency ward six months back. He had a paralysis attack on the left side. Numerous tests later doctors diagnosed weakness and old age as the cause. Nanu once had a heart attack in the past so doctors also linked his current state to the past medical history.

Nanu at 74 was brimming with life and positive energy. He always wanted to live and experience the world. The more he explored, the more he wanted to. To him life was a beauty bestowed from the heaven above.

In the emergency ward, with his own will power he stood up taking support. He walked albeit slowly in spite of the contrary suggestions by his family members. He believed in mind power and Yogic healing. Soon he was discharged. He was back at home and everyone was happy!

Six months had passed. He again had weakness in his limbs accompanied by constant pain. He was loosing his usual vigor and charm. That was so unusual about him. He collapsed one day.

He was again rushed to the emergency ward of the city hospital. Doctors in the small town could not diagnose the reason. He was airlifted to Mumbai. Suddenly he had multiple organ failure. Kito didn’t have the heart to bear what doctors had to say.

To the shock of everyone he was in the last stage of blood cancer. The onset had begun 6 months back when he had paralytic attack.

Kito was still sobbing on the wheelchair when doctors rushed inside the I.C.U. To Kito’s utter dismay Nanu breathed his last. She was numb with pain in her heart; if only, Doctors could have diagnosed six months earlier, he would be ALIVE and kicking to spread happiness, laughter and Joy.

Alas! No more.

  2. Your description of Nanu's paralytic attack brought back memories of my own Nanu's sufferings... Definitely makes us sad, but then they have moved to a place where there is no more pain...

  7. Gripping read...and as i believe whatever we may think, do or believe...Fate has it's own story to tell which no one knows...IF ONLY people could know what was in store for them...life would be very different by what it is now...!!!

    1. Definitely Anjan, if people could see what was in store for them life would be different and manipulated to a large extent. Its good that we live in present and cant predict, life would have lost its charm.

  11. Oh! That's very sad and touching. But at the same time, it gives a hint to the healthcare situation our country is facing.

    1. Oh yes that is a valid point you have raised, healthcare needs a major boost, esp the primary and secondary healthcare service.
