Whatever his attire, he wore those bulky boots. He missed her so badly that he wore them to sleep. Friends and family chided him for being a moron. Everyone thought he had turned mad.
He simply ignored them as it was her last memory, a gift from her on their second meeting. She was sad to see that he could not afford decent shoes, as on their first date he wore flip-flops.
One day a beggar with empty feet turned up on his door.
He gave those away to him as she would have done the same!
